Yes, you can, but do not take them completely away from Mom's milk. I've never heard of a mother dog 'running out' of milk, it may just be that she's not comfortable - check her teats to be sure they're all ok. I've raised 2 litters of american eskimos and while they were pretty much weaned by 6 weeks, they would still try to drink mom's milk up until 10 weeks old (when they went to their new homes). I used Natural Choice - Nutro canned puppy food and just made sure to mix it up really good, so that it was nice and soft for them. Once they got to be about 7-8 weeks, they started eating the hard puppy food on their own, supplemented with the canned food. You MUST make sure you use a high-quality puppy food though. Anything with meal or by-product is not GOOD for your puppies. They need the nutrients offered in the high-quality foods. Read the first 4-5 ingredients. Most of the low grade stuff starts off with "water sufficient for processing" this means that the food contains more water than anything else. High-quality foods start out with "turkey, turkey broth, chicken, chicken broth, duck" as their highest content. These are much healthier for your puppies.
Hope this helps!

At this point, the breeder should just be starting to offer the puppies some hard (good quality) puppy food, moistened with a bit of warm water so that it's palatable for them. The mother would be on that same hard puppy food. The puppies are still nursing though and will obtain the bulk of their nutrition through mother's milk. They should not leave the mother until 8 - 10 weeks at the earliest. They should be kept together with the mother, there is much they will learn in that time. Under no circumstances should the puppy be separated from the litter or mother. It is not old enough to be weaned, it is not old enough to be away from its family, and it needs the skills that staying in the litter will provide.

You could supplement her milk with a good quality puppy food. Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. We always start to wean our pups at 4 weeks, so yes you can start to supplement their food now. We use normal puppy kibble mixed with warm water in a blender to start puppy's off on. It is far better balanced for a puppy's needs than caned food.

A momma dog doesn't "run out" of milk for her puppies. How do you know they aren't full? Trust me on this, they'll eat as much as you offer them, but that does NOT mean they need it. Momma knows how much to feed them. Don't interfer with that until they are 6 weeks old, then introduce softened (soaked in warm water) dry kibble. Never feed canned food to young puppies, in my opinion.

They are definitely ready for some soft canned food before those babies starve. Sounds like Mama Dog is attempting to wean them.

I start feeding my pups dry food wet down at four weeks of age. I do not remove them from the mother One or two feedings a day will be good for them.
