What is good place to park near Union Square in NYC? Garage suggestions, other tips welcomed. thanks!

There are a number of parking lots around Union Sq. -- all expensive. After 7:00 pm when the loading zones open up you may find something on the commercial side streets to the West & North. Until then forget it.

Lunch City Bakery,18th street between 5th and 6th Avenue--amazing salad bar, fab mac and cheese Jerry's, Prince street between Wooster and Greene--delicious sandwiches Good Enough to Eat, Amsterdam Ave at 83rd Street--brunch is wonderful (and crowded) Dinner Nam, Reade Street at West Broadway--Vietnamese, cool, downtown, good food Sosa Borella, 8th Ave, 50th Street--Argentine/American, relaxing Otto, Fifth Ave at 8th St--pizza, Italian, fun place Florent, Gansevoort St between Washington and Greenwich (just south of 14th st)--great steak frites, open 24 hours, cool neighborhood This are all reasonably priced. Have fun!

I wouldn't drive near there. I'd grab some sort of mass transit or cab or limo from someplace else.
