Actually, the college I attend has a gym free for students. I just moved here from out of state and I don't know anyone. So, if I want to work out its going to be by myself. I am a 22 year old female. I am 5'6" and a half. My weight goes from 155 to 160 throughout the week. I was in good shape in high school even though I only did what was required in gym. Now 5 years after high school, I have gained 20LBS. I would like to be 140-145. Any sugestions on what I should do at the gym to lose weight and get tone? Keep in mind the last 5 years, I have been pretty much doing no physical activities. :) Thanks

I am physically about the same build as you. Since you are looking to lose weight I would say do more cardio than weightlifting. It is important to do both, but focus more on cardio.

Since it has been a while since you have been physically active, try walking on the treadmill. To burn more calories with just a little more effort, set the treadmill on an uphill setting. It won't be much harder, and you will really work your lower body. After you are comfortable with walking uphill some, say a few weeks after you start working out, try walking for ninety seconds, then jogging for one minute. Over time you can lower your walking time and extend your jogging time.

To tone up, I am not sure if your gym has wieght machines or free weights, but just keep your weight low and do a lot of reps. Form is more important than weight. If you are using free weights, watch yourself in the mirror (even though it seems silly) to make sure that you are not swinging your body weight around to acheive your desired amount of reps. If you find you are not doing an excercise properly, lower the weight, and try to get the form right.

Good luck, I hope you reach your goals. :)

If you have been virtually inactive then anything would be a good start. However, to see long lasting results you'll want to take a look at your lifehabits overall: are you eating healthy (lean protein, complex carbs including veggies), are you properly hydrated; are you getting adequate rest? These things all work together with exercise to not only keep you weigt down but keep you feeling good.

As a general rule you'll want to a regiment that includes weight training as well as cardio. Maybe you will start with upper bdy strength training 1 day, cardio, another day, lower body strength training another day, and another day of cardio (being sure to rest your legs before doing the second day of cardio). This is just so you get the general idea.

Your metabolism has slowed down. This is known as The Freshman 15.

Lift weights and do cardio.

Join the aerobics classes (free) offered by the school, or take a fitness class (usually 2 credits).

First off, START SLOW! Don't over-do your first few work outs in your desire to slim down. You will end up in a lot of pain, and no desire to work out again.
Secondly, find out what kind of excersises you enjoy doing. Running? Kick Boxing? Spinning? That way, you will be more inclined to put those sweats on and head over to the gym after a long day of school.

Cut calories and start moving. Take a magazine and read on the treadmill. Sign up for a few aerobic classes, whatever just move
