I was looking at getting a new Glock, ive stopped on either the G21C or the G17C. only real difference is 9mm or 45 auto. i always hear a ton about stopping power, but wouldnt 2 weel placed shots in the head be better than once stray in a limb? i would like some shooters input to clarify my decision hopefully!

Of course police always shoot center mass ( well almost always, some shoot two center mass one head)

But few police carry the 45 most carry either the9mm or the 40.

I carried a glock 17 for years, and shot 1000's of rounds out of it.
I never had one single jam, ever, now I keept it clean, and replaced the spring after each 1000 rounds.

But If I was starting all over again, I would go with the 40 today

Personally, I would go with the 45 auto, because in most if not all shootouts or confrontations, you will be at close range, 2-20 feet. Yes the 9mm might hold more ammo, but getting hit by a 45 anywhere will take you down. The 9mm is a good bullet, but very fast and can go clean through a person, but a 45 was designed for stopping power. Another good round is a 40cal. If its for police work, then you might want more ammo, but for personal use, I have and carry a 45 auto, with a high capacity mag.

in a law enforcement application, you'll be shooting at a moving target that may be impervious to pain while you are experiencing an adrenaline dump, making precise shot placement nearly impossible. That is why LEO training emphasizes "center mass" shooting. 9mm is small round with limited effectiveness, as proven by and to numerous police agencies. 45ACP is an excellent round with good kinetic energy transfer upon impact, but the recoil may be excessive and hard to control for a smaller shooter. Good intermediate rounds are the 10mm (somewhat hard to find ammo) and the .40S&W (easy to find). Both have better kinetic energy transfer ("stopping power") than the 9mm, and easier recoil (which equates to quicker reacquisition of a good sight picture for follow on shots) than the .45ACP.

Two well-placed shots to the head would be great, but not always the easiest to place on a target that is coming towards you and shooting back. I think I would go for the .45, and be happy if I put my shots in the 10 ring.
I like the G21, I wish my department would let us carry them.

Any shooter will tell you the torso is the biggest target on a human. Common sense. If you're good enough to nail headshots, then do like my brother and join the armed forces. They tried to get him into sniper school, but he preferred airborne. He's in Iraq now, carrying a lot better equipment than the police.

Go between and get a Glock 23. It's a .40 cal. and you can split the difference

Just great...another gun nut within the ranks. You'll find that the thrill of a pistol wears off quickly. Especially when you find yourself praying that you'll never have to use it except for target qualifications every year.
Hopefully you'll learn.
