There are scammers EVERYWHERE, not just craigslist so you have to be careful. I have used craigslist to buy things a few times and have had good experiences. My brother and Aunt also use it on the west coast because it's very popular out there and they have had no problems. My Aunt posted her dog in Craigslist because he nipped at her young daughter and she found a great home for him. Contact some people, meet up with them to see if the dog they are selling is what you want. If you get there and find that they lied about something or it's not what you want, there is nothing that says you have to purchase. Just make sure you take someone else along with you as a safety precaution! As far as puppy mills, there are dogs everywhere from puppy mills including pet stores, there's no way to definitely tell. And even if they were, at least you are providing them with a good home now.

Always be cautious when dealing with the public on any matter that concerns money or trust, public places for meeting are the best, and never use cash to pay, a cashiers check is best. Also if a free pet is involved, meet in a public area and go on a walk in the public area with the dog, and observe behaviors to be sure you get what you ask for. I've used Craigslist and have had no problems so far.

Craigslist is great. It is the people who post on it, just like anywhere else, you get a few bad apples.
I have used it for over 2 years and I too have had those that advertise then don't follow up on the contact. But I have had the same bad lack of response on web sites advertising something, newspaper ads, etc.
Stick with it and you'll find that most are great.
As for the person who said go to the Humane Society, well most of them DON'T allow disabled people to adopt large breed dogs!!!!!!

I trust Craigslist, but it really depends on the individual poster. Some people are truly trying to find new loving homes for their animals, and will make sure that the person has experience with that type of animal, and can provide a safe home.
Then there are some, who only ask a fee, because Craigslist suggests it. They just want to get rid of their animal, and couldn't care less, who takes them.

I LOVE Craigslist. I have gotten furniture, sold things, and have even met my fiance on there. When selling things I have gotten some bogus people trying to buy my stuff, but you can usually tell becasue they are from out of state or out of the country. Otherwise Craigslist is a thumbs-up in my book!

I would do this on a case by case basis... but most on Craigslist are accidental breedings or backyard breeders or puppy mills! Be careful!
See the site stoppuppymills.com for some excellent information!
