you need a ssn to report your earnings you make from your job to the IRS, its the only legal way to work in this country, is with a ssn#.

many people work illegally without a ssn, they often make less money because they do not have a ssn #, they are paid cash under the table, but the IRS will always find out eventually who you are working for, and penalize you for working without a ssn#, even if you cant get one. i would imagine you would be able to get citizenship and get a ssn# of your own, since you are married to a legal US citizen, but people will not warm up to you, as the people that flew the planes into the twin towers were also in your situation, married to someone in the US, but not a US citizen, and otherwise here illegally. this would be why many people give you the cold shoulder, and do not want to talk to you. they are afraid of you taking advantage of our country like the terrorists of 9/11 did. you have a long road ahead of you, if you want to become a good and legal US citizen. if you dont want to become an actual citizen, then there is no one that can legally help you, and any work you do find is very illegal, and you will be caught.

there are many people that stand outside hardware stores, and home improvement centers. they wait all day for someone to drive by, and ask for a handyman. usually these jobs are between 2 private partys, and are almost seen as normal. my father is a legal US citizen, and while he does have his own business, he often subcontracts his services, and does home repairs for private partys. theres nothing illegal about it so long as at the end of the year, you can add up what you earn and tell the IRS how much you made, and give them your ssn# with all this information.

but there are many a people who do have ssn# numbers, and are also looking for work. if someone is looking at hireing a potential employee that does have a ssn#, and someone that doesnt have an ssn#, the only reason why they'd pick you over the person with the ssn# is because they think they can get away with paying you less (and you wouldent be able to complain, because theres no one you can legally go to and complain about), or because the person looking to hire you is not reporting their income to the IRS either, and will likely be caught soon as well.

everyone says "go back to your own country and work there" "we dont want you here" etc
...but honestly, what work? chances are, work for these illegal immigrants is physical labor, 50+ hours a week, getting paid less than 6 thousand a year. No wonder they leave their family to work here. There are plenty of jobs and if people wouldn't FREAK OUT over immigration (people, look at the history books on Irish immigrants in early 20th century, SAME SH*T), you may be able to see that.
But to answer the question, if you dont have a social security number, do you have a (whats it called?) w7? w2? one or the other... if you have it, its basically the same thing and allows you to work. If you DONT have a ssn or w7, i reccommend you get married, get a lawyer, and do the documentation. Until then, stay home and dont get deported.

You need a ssn to work legally. If you came into the US illegally, you are not going to get a ssn, a work permit or green card unless they change the laws. If you came with a visa, you need to apply for your residence and work permit. Once you get the work permit, you can apply for a ssn. Once you get a ssn, you can work. If you want to work illegally, you are not going to find help on this websire for that.

If you are a legal resident, you can apply for a Social Security Number. If you just arrive (just receive your visa), you may have to wait two weeks because the U.S. consultant may had began the process.

If you are here illegally, come here legally. Go back to your country and have your spouse petition for a family visa. Your spouse can seek assistance (for a fee) from a visa consultant. I recommend staying away from lawyers because they will lie.

It is very important to become a legal resident verse an illegal alien. If you are busted, it does not matter if you and your spouse were married over 12 years and have three kids. You are going to be deported.

Contact the Social Security Administration and they can help you. They will of course need to verify your legal status before issuing you with an SSN, so don't forget to take all relevant documentation with you.

If you went through the process of coming here legally, you should have received authorization to work. If you don't have that, then you didn't come legally so you should go work in your home country.

People are so ignorant. ALL YOU WANT TO DO ITS BE ABLE TO WORK LIKE ANY OTHER HUMAN-BEAN, and they have no right to putt you down for your nationality. People on the top are probably losers that live off welfare like 50% of US BORN CITIZENS DO, and the one below obviously should not be giving an answer being that he/she does not know anything about the topic.

What you need to do its make your husband/ wife petition for you thought an Immigration Advocate. If the lawyer does the job correctly you should be receiving your Working Permit from 3-8 months and your green card from 6-12 months. It will only be the temporary residence card being that you have to be married for 2 years with the US citizen to receive the Permanent residence card. You should contact an Immigration lawyer as soon as possible, I currently work for one to if you want send me an e-mail your more than welcome too. Immigrationadvocate@yahoo.com

I can further assist you.
