I have a 99 neon rt and am thinkin of swapping in a motor and trans form an SRT. ive seen cars that have it done but i was wonderin how many mods need to be done to make it fit and how much of a difference in power i could expect this to give me.

I, too, would the answer for this question. I have a '98 neon RT (manaul) and have been thinking about that.

As is often said, anything can be done, but is it worth it?

I had an '01 R/T and have an '02 R/T and an '05 SRT-4. Realizing that your '99 is a first generation Neon and the SRT-4 is the third, many differences are obvious. The good news is that my SRT-4 is a little monster - substantially more powerful than my R/Ts. Although it superficially looks like other Neons, the engine compartment and hood are redesigned for the larger 2.4L turbo engine, the intercooler and the larger manual transmission. Most of the under-the-hood plumbing, including the A/C lines, are unique to the SRT-4. The engine/fuel management system, wiring harness and exhaust system are also unique to this application. The SRT-4 is about 100lbs heavier due to the above, the larger brakes, wheels and tires.

While I certainly appreciate your enthusiasm for this project, I would respectfully suggest you just go buy an SRT-4. This option is probably cheaper and certainly better than modifying your '99. I would buy an '04 or '05 SRT-4, they have 15 more horspower than the '03.

Go join srtforums.com, this is the number one web resource for the srt4 vehicles and you will find several users have made generation 1 neons into sleeper cars using the 2.4 turbo out of the srt4.

As said above however, expect a LOT of difficulty doing so, you may want to just pay the extra cash and get the real deal. Even if you get the engine in the car working perfect, you will end up with suspension issues as the vehicle was not made to handle that much power, and the 'roll' in the earlier model neons is significantly higher than the later models, and even more so than the srt4, the body of which is stiffened up even more than say an sxt.

I drive a 2005 srt4 and it's totally awesome. They are noisy, they ride a little rough, but power is insane throughout the gear ratio, and in 3rd gear there is very little that can touch you.

An average driver will just roast Mustang GT's 2004 and earlier and you will hang right with the 350Z and S2000.

go to www.neons.org/forums and do alot of reading, or just ask rite away. one thing thou is that 1st gen neons have cable clutch. srt-4 has hydrolic clutch.and if you wana use the srt-4 tranny you also have to notch out frame i think. its a expensive and timeworthy project. looking at 2-5000 for motor and tranny. the srt-4 motor will bolt rite to your 1st gen tranny. the only pain is splicing all the wires to run the motor.
