I would like to know how long it takes to get results back from, say,ITU pathology reports,on say bowel segments etc.My father had an operation on 2/11/05,the specimens were sent off,but they did not get the results from them until 11/11/05,four days after my father had died.I hope somebody knows how long it is supposed to take to get the results back.

It depends on what they have to do (grow cultures, perform tests, etc) but you should be able to get this information from your hospital.
If you are in the UK contact the PALS team (Patient Advice Liaison Service) at your hospital and ask for help.
You could also harass your GP.
If you're outside the UK, sorry I am not sure.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I pray for your family through these hard times. Not knowing is just awful. For the most part, it usually takes a week for a benign diagnosis or just to check for margins or nodes. However you should have had a preliminary report of sorts within a couple weeks. An intradepartmental consultation could take up to 3 or 4 weeks. When a specimen is sent out for consultation and/or further testing, it is usually quite a bit longer (months). These tests are generally cytogenetic analysis, etc. These are to narrow down the exact malignancy. I hope this helps answer your question.

First of all, I am very sorry for your loss. Second, those results took absolutely too long to get back! I have NEVER heard of a pathology report taking 9 months. I have had family members in and out of hospitals for as long as I can remember and never hearing of something like this. My mother is in and out of the hospital for ailments, which has required them removing something from her body and testing it and it NEVER took that long. Wow! I can only share with you my personal experiences. I wish I could give you specific reference to some medical regs and policies, but I can't. I would definitely research this issue and come to a conclusion that will at least bring you peace or perhaps lead to other directions (law). Good luck with this. I wish you the best.

It really depends on the hospital but the time you waited sounds about right. A week to ten days is what they recommend.

I am sorry for your loss.
