The same reason there are so many different religions and occults.

Some people can accept blind faith that is required in many religions. And to comment on some of the previous answers a true atheist doesnt believe in a god/devil or higher power. If you have any spirituality what so ever then you are not an atheist. Also the ignorant claim that I read from someone claiming its because you use your brain is crap.

Take a look at the beauty in nature and the world and then try to explain how it just magically came into being one day out of no where. You cant create something from nothingness. Life doesnt just come into being without help.

Because there's no proof of one.

I can shoot down about anything short of 'the beginning' which I'm not entirely convinced happened. But most people can't quite grasp the fact things may have been around.

If there was actual proof of god, if god stopped in for a chat, I wouldn't be overwhelmed that my beliefs were so wrong, I'd thank what ever being happened to show up for finally getting their *** in gear. I'd also greatly enjoy finding out what if any text that being had sent down.

But it hasn't happened yet, maybe some kind of god signal could be used.

I am not so much convinced there is no God as I am convinced there is no God that has been explained by humans.

I am an Atheist because I do not believe in a God. I can not bring myself to believe in a God when I do not have the slightest clue what that God could be, nor is there any evidence for a God. On top of those reasons are the simple facts that all of the Gods created by man that I have researched have fundamental flaws.

Logic VS old book with unbelievable stories. One view.
Another is man made God in his image to quell fear or control the masses.
Everything evolves, even religion. Maybe evolution is inspired by God, like people say the bible is, and maybe the energy we call life is independant of a thinking creator, maybe, like a tree trying to survive on the edge of a windswept hill life just is.
FYI....I am not convinced of anything except life is better than the alternative!!!

Why are you convinced there is one? Atheists use their own minds, they do not rely on the dictacts of another to decide right and wrong for them. looking at all the crap that almost all religions are into, I can certainly understand their feelings, although i am not an atheist myself. But neither am i christian...
I believe in a higher power, but not in the way most people do.
i don't believe in the type of god that i hear so many people professing, the kind of god that judges, condemns, punishes, condones killing, lying, rape, etc. as long as it is done in 'his" name...sorry, my concept of 'god' is much bigger than that.

I think the idea of a SINGLE human-like deity creating such vastly different beings...such as plants, animals (a ton of different types there-amphibious, mammals, reptiles), gases, etc.
those can all be divided into male and female-nowhere do you see anything being able to reproduce if it's made up of only one gender-
So, why would there be a single creator, much less one that is male?
Observation makes that theory absurd.

All religious people deny the existence of countless gods except their own. And nobody asks them for an explanation.

Because we can't rationally see how one being is guiding the whole universe and in charge of our actions and govern the past and future. Why are the religious so convinced there is a god?

I am a reborn Christian and believe the content of the whole Bible because of the working of the Holy Spirit (in me). However, I do not have enough faith NOT to believe. An atheist needs more faith than a believer, because he needs to believe AGAINST everything that he/she can see, experience, feel, touch etc. in short, you need a LOT of "faith" to be an atheist.

One could also ask why Christians are convinced there is one.

I believe atheists don't believe in God because they see Christians praise God and then turn around and judge and curse at every non-righteous person in thier path.

I believe in God because I met him, I talk to him, and he talks back, along with every other real Christian
