If you're going to be doing this a lot, one of the simplest ways is to get a USB "flash drive" - about the size of a cigarette lighter, available from all computer shops and many other places (they're often given away as corporate gifts).

You plug this in to a USB socket on your desktop, copy all the files on to it, unplug it, then plug it in to the laptop and copy all the files off again.


If it's a one-off occurrence, if your desktop has a CD writer I'd suggest burning your files to CD and moving them that way.

The flash drive is quicker (and you can use it again and again).

1. Run an anti-virus scan on your infected PC. It might cure ALL your problems! At the very least you need to pin point what application is the virus or contains the virus. Otherwise, yes, you could potentially transfer the virus. But, it is possible to transfer files this way, but try to make sure both the external and internal hard drives are the same format (NTFS or FAT32). 2. If you completely FORMAT your harddrive is WILL rid the hard drive of any infection. Be sure to do a FULL format and NOT a quick format if you suspect a virus. If you need a tutorial on how to properly format your hard drive, google "format hard drive" for a list of tutorials. Just be sure to do a full format.

You have several choices: 1) Burn them to CD and then copy them to your laptop; 2) use a flash drive or jump drive to put the files on, and then copy them to your laptop from there; or 3) link the two computers with a USB cable and copy the files directly over to your laptop. A lot of choices, but all are really simple to learn.

You could get yourself a USB pen drive, copy 'em on to there and then stick it in your laptop and copy them back into it (if you have usb ports on your machines). Then you could use the pen drive for anything else that takes your fancy in the future.

You do realise that copying files/folders won't transfer your software?

Actually, there are few ways:-
1)Use USB/thumb drive = a bit by bit transfer
2)Burn to CD then copy it to your laptop =wasting your CD-R
3)Using cross-cable to transfer files between 2 computer...
This is how i did:
-Set ip address to PC1 as 192.168.100.1
-Set ip address to PC2 as 192.168.100.2
-Set net mask to both 255.255.255.0
-Default gateway to both is 192.168.100.1
-Do not change other settings..
#Now you can begin transferring files..Its like a small network.
If you want to transfer between 3 computer..its also the same..
just add PC3 ip to 192.168.100.3 and use same default gateway..

Some drive problems can be easily fixed by yourself using easily available tools. I found the info at http://fixit.in useful. Try this site, if you can get what is required.

buy a usb memory stick can get them at any electrical shop for about £10 they can hold loads of stuff that way youjust put it all on to that then all on to your laptop. either that or get a usb wire that has two usb ports on either either and jsut tranfer it directly
