No, it is a feline virus and viruses are mostly species specific. It is of course contagious to other cats.

The length of the cat's life is unpredictable. Minimizing exposure to other infections and the best possible diet to keep the immune system strong are crucial issues in helping the cat have a happy life.

You can go to www.littlebigcat.com and read Dr. Jean Hovfe's article titled "Living with FIV" to get some more information to help your cat. There are many articles there about the best diets for cats too.

No it is not zoonotic ( transferable to humans), just to other cats. There are treatments of interferon that have been somewhat successful. It is expensive and there are precautions to be taken. Like a person with aids it is an immune virus and it may take years for symptoms to show up. It depends on how good the immune system is to begin with.

No you cannot. FIV is a strain that humans are completely immune to. I'm so sorry if your little kitty has it though... Very sad for you. But rest assured, while the cat is still with you, you're safe!

No, you can't get it and yes, there is medication for it if it is caught in time. Best thing is to make sure the cat is vaccinated before it gets it. Sometimes a person don't know what to look for and then it is too late. Bette and cheaper to vaccinate than to try to cure when there is no guarantee of saving it after kitty is infected.
