Beagle's can be a handful, so hopefully your friend is prepared for what to expect. They tend to be barkers (bayers actually). I personally think a puppy training class is a must for this breed. I have met quite a few that turn into nippers, so early prevention is a good idea.

Many of the people that have them really love the breed...but at the same time, they can be a very stubborn dog and if they end up in the wrong home, they can easily wind up in a shelter. So make sure your friend has really read up on the breed and understands what to expect.

After 101 dalmations was re-released in the theatre, the demand for dalmation puppies was outrageous. People didn't research the breed and quickly found out that they aren't necessarily good dogs with children. There was soon an abundance of dalmations available at shelters.

The best way to really get an impression of what to expect is to talk to a good and reputable breeder (do not buy one from a pet shop, backyard breeder, etc). A good breeder will ask that you relinquish the dog back to them if things don't work out. And they can really give you an idea of what the breed is really like...they don't want to sell their puppies to someone that isn't aware of all the ups and downs that come with their dogs. Their goal is to match their dogs with the right people, not to turn a profit.

I have three beagles. Two I got from the Humane League (Chaser and Houdini), and one is the puppy of Houdini (Patches). All three dogs have been through obedience training and are pretty well behaved. When I went to my first obedience class, the instructor shook her head sympathetically when she heard I wanted to train my beagles. She said "Well, you might still get something from this class." Beagles are trainable but require patience. You have to be very consistent with the training and you have to put the time in. (It takes about 15-30 minutes a day for a month or so, and 5-10 minutes daily for a while, and then 5-10 minutes periodically for refresher training.) Also, you have to be careful with food. Beagles love to eat and will try to eat just about anything. My have eaten pizza, sandwiches, rocks, and rugs. Because they like to eat, you have to carefully monitor how much food you give them so that they don't end up overweight!

I have a beagle that is almost 3. She chews up everything, barks at anything that moves, eats like a horse, will eat anything, have to be very careful on that one. She will try to woof down everything before my border collie has the chance to eat and therefore she has gotten food lodged in her mouth and I had to pry her mouth on open to get it out. Very scary on that one. So if your friend gets a beagle she does need alot patience and just love it and be kind to it. Beagles can be a pain in the neck but they are very loyale and loving, I love mine and wouldnt trade her for anything but I will never own another beagele!!!

Beware that if you get a Beagle they bark ALOT and they are very hyper and LOVE to wander. They just put their nose to the ground and go. But in turn, they can be very loving dogs.

Teach them not to bark. Beagles have a horrible bark.

I know that beagles can be difficult to housebreak... otherwise they are about like any other dog. Good luck!
