There are several possibilities. Either the yeast or the flour may be old. The water temperature may be too hot (killing the yeast) or too cold (not making it rise). The bread machine may be istting in a draft or too close to a heat source (the refrigerator or stove). Try moving it to another kitchen counter.

Ignore those who tell you bread from a bread machine is inferior to homemade. It is homemade. I often make dough in the machine, then shape it into a braid, spiral, loaf or rolls and bake in the oven.

The yeast may be out of date, or the water temp was off. I have a Breadman, and it happens to me more often when I try to have it bake the bread in a pan. If I use the dough cycle it usually turns out just fine by finishing it in the oven.

I'm not perfect at this by any means, those are just the most common things I've heard for heavy bread.

Are you using the proper flour? You need a good quality strong flour for making bread. Tesco's "bread making" flour only works if you add a vitamin C tablet.

Either your yeast is too old or you are letting it come into too much contact with the other ingredients before mixing starts. If you are using those boxed mixes maybe it's too old. Try using your own ingredients, most machines come with a recipe book, or you can find good ones on-line.

Home made bread is always heavier than the airy fluff they sell in the supermarket, maybe that's the problem?

Bread makers are evil. Learn how to make your own bread.

How old is the yeast you are using? That sounds like the problem to me.
