I have no idea about geocaching, but my boyfriend loves it. I really want to buy him a handheld gps unit for christmas. I would be so greatful if anyone could reccomend one for under £200. If not I would appreciate any good websites. I have tried to research the different models, but it is all very technical and i think it needs an expert to determine what is the best, however i really want this present to be a surprise. I would really appreciate any help anyone could give!

The bad thing about Geocaching is that unless one already has a GPS, there not going to enjoy it. The best would be a Survey grade which puts one within inches of a target site, and that would be a Trimble with computer hardware starting at around 5000 bucks. I use Garmin and since I spend a lot of time in the wilderness, I have a dashmount so I csn see what speed and what direction I am going at a glance, and with maps this unit cost me 400 bucks. Perhaps you would be better off finding out which model he already has and buying him accessories, like an autocharger or a dashmount. Perhaps a set of 7.5 maps of your area would be thoughtful? They can be gotten at any Geology Department at your local university, or at a Blueprint shop. Even sporting Goods stores carry them.

Another suggestion. If you are not too familiar with GPS and how they work, especially for geocaching you may want to look at a GPs that also has a built in electronic compass. When trying to find the cache, having this option makes it much easier.

Magellan Platinum or color are both rugged and quality GPS handhelds. and Run for about $200 US or less. you can then buy the cables and software to attach it to your PC/laptop.

I have the platinum and took it with me to Iraq last year and found it invaluable.
