I've been growing my hair out from having it very short for a long time. Now that it is a good length, it seems to be thinning in the back and I don't know if something is wrong or if I don't remember what my hair was like the last time I had it long. I find myself wearing it in a pony tail a lot and I'm not sure if that could be the problem. Any suggestions for helping it grow back or thicken up?

volumizing shampoos and conditioners work really well, find one that fits your type of hair and budget. There's some vitamins for hair and nails, which work great. Also, over the counter prenatal vitamins are real good to help regrow or somewhat help thicken your hair. I know it may seem weird to take prenatal vitamins but you dont have to be pregnant or trying to get pregnant to take them. My step mothers doctor told her to take them,(along with her other meds) after she endured a neverous breakdown to help her build back her strength, and help her as well because her hair began to thin out as well from so much stress. They contain a higher concentration of some vitamins that will help in the long run. My mom also had this trick of massaging her scalp for at least 10-15 minutes before bed time to stimulate her hair folicles to help her with her thin hair,it works but it must be a continuous process, like exercising. Fortunately I came out with long thick hair but I still take my vitamins to maintain it's luster and strength.Try not to use to much hair product either when trying to thicken out your hair, you wont see great result if you use so much product weighing your hair down. It will be several weeks before you see awesome results with any of these tricks but they will help. Hope one works for you. Good luck.

Simple fix... are you sleeping on your back, rubbing the same spot all night? Try sleeping on your side.

Big fix... You may want to overhaul your diet. Oily, fatty, rich foods can give you oily skin and scalp. Depends on the person, but some of us can't process tons of it... so go easy on the fast food for a few months and see what happens. Then there is the opposite problem...dry skin, hair and scalp... You may need more healthy fluids.

Further, as we get older, our body can't process certain foods. You've heard of lactose intolerance? Some people are protein intolerant... carb-intolerant etc., and sugars amplify this... so easy on the junk. And you may want to get a multi-enzyme... which could prove more important than the vitamin. The enzyme will help your body absorb the vitamin.

Also, stress... it can change your body chemistry so much that in certain cases, people lose hair or go grey (my uncle who was in Vietnam) , then the hair goes back to normal colour (sometimes) after stress goes away.... so go get a massage and do Yoga or something.

Huge fix... Hair replacement doctors.

There are some good books on food health... research on the net. I like the book called Power Aging.

First thing you should do is stop tying your hair in a ponytail. It may not be causing it but it makes it worse.
Try putting some aloe vera (the plant) every night time before you sleep. It really helps thicken hair. Wait for a month or two, and you'll see the change. It may smell funny but it's worth it.

Take birth control pills. THey made my hair really thick. Also fluctuating hormones, (pregnancy, general hormonal changes) can cause hair to thin. After I had my daughter my hair literally fell out in clumps.

I have the same problem. It maybe a medicine that you take. You might want to speak with your doctor about this.
I have not found out for myself, so let me know the answer too.
