Not derived from a living thing. Eg An abiotic stress would be something like cold or drought. A biotic stress would be caused by a living thing such as a pathogen.

Usually, the prefix 'a' means 'not' - abiotic is something that is not a living thing. In biology, this usually refers to the physical environment - soil properties, topographic features, climate, etc.
