I have two step kids who come to visit us for the summer. They are 10 and 11. We live in Charleston SC and they live in Burbank Ca. I know that some airlines will take children flying alone. Last year my husband flew out and picked them up and then did the same thing to take them home but it was way to expensive. We had no money to do anything with the kids when they got here and his tickets were so expensive we just can not afford to fo that again this year. Any ideas?

Most of the major airlines have a minor travel policy and program. They vary from airline to airline and you should only buy a ticket after you have inquire about their policy and cost. Delta for example charges $50 for nonstop or no plane change or $75 when there is a change of plane involved like to Charleston (each way). The adult drooping them off needs to have all of the information as far as address and name of the adult picking them up, or they will not release the child. They walk the child on and off the plane and handle the transferee in the hub airport. If there is a delay the stay under supervision the hole time until the next flight.
So in your case for two children the total cost would be $300.00 extra and it would probably be cheaper and less stress full then flying to CA twice.

i did some solo flying when i was a kid, i think it is just that maybe int'l flights? not sure.. some airlines might be different, just mail them some presents, either by mail or do online stuff and have their house the destination, and just save some money from not paying for huge plane tickets.. so that you can do the whole thing next year, and buy the tickets further in advance before all the holiday stuff, the tickets should be cheaper then too.

minors can fly. there usually is someone who walks them to their gate and makes sure that they get there and everything. just tell your kids to ask for help right when they get there. or even better, when they are checking in, tell the person at the desk that they will need some help. if they have stops before they get to their destination, then tell them to stay on the plane until everyone else is off so that the attendant can help them out. just tell them to keep asking people for help and if they ever get scared then find someone with an airport badge to help them. good luck.

sometimes airlines will have an airline employee accompany minors on the plane and make sure they get from gate to gate...there is of course an additional fee but not too much i don't think.
