half mast. Think of the mast of a ship. Flags were flown to communicate with other ships. Flag poles are like those masts. A flag at full mast means everything is as it should be, at half mast there is death and mourning.

Half Mast is correct. To raise a flag to half mast, it is to be run quickly to the top of the pole and slowly lowered half way down. To remove the flag (at sun down) the flag is to be quickly raised back to the top of the pole and slowly lowered down.
