We just got a new puppy the other day, It has been 11 years since I have had to potty train and I want to make sure I am doing it right. We have been taking him outside as soon as he starts sniffing, rewarding him when he does his business, scolding him lightly when he does it in the house, and we have been slowly kenneling him. Can anyone give me any suggestions to help me out! Thanks.
ps he is a 7 week old black lab

From the sounds of it you are doing really good i would also suggest staying stead fast in the way you train him dont switch up say the same things to him so he does not get confused such as always saying potty or bathroom or outside. it helps the puppy get a better idea of what it is. also labs are usually trained very easily but like any other dog it needs work. if there is no one home with the dog during the day i suggest getting a kennel and putting him in there only when you leave as to teach him that there is things he is not supposed to do when no one is home. lastly give him a toy he really likes in the kennel with him when you leave and only give it to him when you leave sort of to keep him busy it has been my experience that when he gets older bones work best

You are doing it right so far but I would crate the puppy while in the house until he learns that he is only to potty outside. You could take him out to play whenever you want but when he is not being watched carefully you should crate him. I know its hard to have them in the crate but if they have a toy to play with they are just fine. We will have ours out for a short period of time at different times of the day. You are doing good watching for the cues of needing to go. Sometimes labs can be a little stubborn with housebreaking but they are very smart also so dont slack, stay consistant. They pick up on everything you do.

it does sound like you are doing everything right, great job and yes you need patients. He will get it.
my husband would say you need to scold him a little bit harsher but I have always had a hard time with that, and do it the way you are doing it, I felt like I got better results, I mean we both got results in the end but I liked your/my way better, teach with love seems to work and we have a bichon who is almost a year old now

Sounds good.
Kenneling helps with indoor training, since they won't "go" where they sleep.
Could take him out soon after meal, instead of waiting until he sniffs. He's sniffing for an indoor spot!

Crate training is the best way to go. Put him in it while you are gone and while you are asleep. Other than that he'll be house broken in no time. Good luck.
