More to that question than meets the eye at first. Thee are periods when the strong take control, and everybody says that that is the natural state of things. But as time goes by the strong get lazy, and it is the meek and humble bureaucrats who - bit by bit - come to actually control the use of power. This goes on until some crisis occurs that requires some strong authority to take command if the crisis is to be surmounted. If that does not happen a new community - with its own strong leadership - takes over until their meek and mild clerks gather effective power into their offices. It is rare that a community - state or enterprise - can provide continual strong leadership. When that happens there is likely to be strong challenges as well, which can result in internecine conflict. My answer to your question is that the meek will inherit the earth for as long as it survives. Once it has burnt it it will not matter.

Actually, 2 Peter is talking about the world. Not the earth. Otherwise, you have a contradiction. Genesis 11:1 says "The "earth" continued to be of one language and one set of words". Obviously the planet didn't talk, it was speaking of people on the earth.

Also, if you examine all of what 2 Peter says, he himself says that he is talking about all of the ungodly men.

""But by the same word, the heavns and the earth that are now stored up for fire, and are being reserved to the day of judgment and of *destruction* *of* *the* *ungodly* men." - 2 Peter 3:7.

Ecclesiastes says that the earth will endure forver.

"A generation is going, and a generation is coming; but the earth is standing even to time indefinite" - Ecclesiastes 1:4

As with the flood, (Which Peter was just talking about in the chapter before) all ungodly people will be destroyed at Armageddon (Revelation 16) off of the earth. He was using the flood from the previous chapter as an illustration to show what the end of the system of things will be like. The "World" of mankind alienated from god will be gone, cleaned up.

Then Revelation 21:4 will become a reality. There will be no more death. Obviously, this can't be talking about heaven, because heaven never had death. The "meek will inheriet the earth", and the many other scriptures that discuss the coming new paradise earth, in which, as Psalms and other portions say: All of the ungodly people who insist on practicing evil despite the warning they are given, will be destroyed for their disobedience.

As 1Thessalonians 5:3 "Whenever it is that they are saying: "Peace and Security!" then sudden destruction is to be upon them just as the pang of distress upon a pregnant woman, and they will by no means escape"

The "Sign" that Jesus gave at Matthew 24, in which ever one of those facets have to be occuring at the same time; simotaneously. Unprecedented war, disease, famine, earthquakes, persecution of Christians, false prophets, lawlessness, all during one of the greatest preaching campaigns worldwide the earth had ever seen would be occuring. In addition to Daniel and Amos that states that during the Last Days, Gods people would gain more and more spiritual understanding.

He purposefully did not tell us the day or the hour (Matthew 24:36) - so that another prophecy could be fulfilled from both Habakkuk 2:3 and in 2 Peter 3:3, that it would *seem* to delay so that rediculers would start with their riducule; stating that, in essence: "You have always been saying the end is coming".

There are hundreds of other prophecies that show that we are living in the Last Days, and close to the time that God will fulfill these promises. Even down to the type of Goverments that would exist, and that a system of goverment would spring into action, that was given it's authority by every other goverment of the earth

"By inspiration, I came to be in the Lords Day . . And the dragon [Satan] gave to [the beast] its power and its throne and great authority.

And I saw one of its heads as though slaughtered to death, but its death-stroke got healed, and all the earth followed the wild beast with admiration. . . .And the wild beast that was but is not, it is also an eighth king, but springs forth from the seven, but it goes off into destruction." - Revelation 1:10; 13:2,3; 17:11

Yes, that is a wonderful promise from our Creator and it will soon be fulfilled. When it says the earth will be burnt up, that is symbolic for destruction of the "world" of ungodly people, and the works are the elements of all false religion and all political systems.
Jesus meant what he said in his sermon on the mount.
The Psalmist also stated this at Psalm 37:9-11--
"For evildoers shall be cut off; but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth. For yet a little while and the wicked shall not be; yea, thou shalt diligently look for his place, and it shall not be. But the meek shall inherit the earth, and shall delight themselves in the abundance of peace."
How do we know what Gods plan is for the earth? He tells us at::
Psalm 67:6-7--"Then shall the earth yield her increase; and God, even our own God, shall bless us. God shall bless us; and all the ends of the earth shall fear him."
Psalm 119:90---"Thy faithfulness is unto all generations: thou hast established the earth, and it abideth."
Proverbs 10:30--"The righteous shall never be removed: but the wicked shall not inhabit the earth."
Ecclesiastes 1:4--"One generation passeth away, and another generation cometh: but the earth abideth for ever."
Isaiah 45:18---"For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else."
Psalm 115:16--"The heavens are the heavens of Jehovah; But the earth hath he given to the children of men." ASV

Our planet earth is here to stay.

Not sure how much you already know, but the meek will inherit the earth during the millenial kingdom and potentially during the eternal kingdom after that. The earth will be destroyed after the millenial kingdom. The timeline goes: rapture, tribulation, second coming, millenial kingdom, satan loosed one last time, final judgement, earth destroyed by fire and remade.

See Rev. 19 for a picture of Christ's victory at his second coming, go through Rev. 20 to see the millenial kingdom and Rev. 21:1 starts with the remaking of the earth.

Also note that the beattitudes are also related to salvation. Only God can make us pure at heart, only the saved thirst after hunger and righteousness, only the saints will be persucuted for righteousness' sake, only the repentent are poor in spirit, etc.

The meek will inherit the earth and that is correct. The rich will give the money to develop it. The proud will proclaim ownership afterwards.

There will be a "new heaven and new earth". So God not only recycles but He will freshen it up a bit before the meek get it.

Jesus spoke in metaphors. Perhaps he was trying to give the meek some hope that their way was superior to the "strong", or to give them some strength to endure trials and tribulations of life.

Another contradiction.

Meek people cannot inhereit the earth because the strong are the ones that survive (according to Nature)

The earth will eventually burn up because of the sun, which will eventually die, not by any divine works.

Christ was light years ahead of other minds in that era, but he spoke using metaphores and thought provoking parables. A learned person strives to understand, while others dwell on verbs, nouns and adjectives.
