Are you talking cabinets and appliances? Ikea has some really nice cabinets that I have seen used on remodeling shows. You would have to shop around for appliances, but there should be some really great sales right now. Check out Sears or the Home Depot or Lowe's. They usually will have no interest for several months if you spend over a certain amount. The best thing about it is that you can do most of the price and comparison shopping online.

An entire kitchen? as in all the appliances? Well an appliance store would be the first place to start.
Dishwasher will run between 300 and 900$
Range anywhere from 800 to 9,000 depending on type, size and features
Fridge typically $700 to 3000 again, depending on size, and features.
Microwave, will run about $100 to 200 for a decent countertop model.
Look around your town for an appliance repair shop, they typically refurbish and resell old appliances, much much cheaper than new, typically 50% at least.

A typical kitchen remodel will run between $8,000 to 16,000, a little less if you plan on doing most of the work.

I assume your friend has a house that they own. you wouldn't want to go this route on a lease or rental.

Or are you talking about cookware, such as pots and pans, dishes and what not?

Less than a $1,000 - try toys-r-us. You either have a very tiny kitchen or you have little knowledge of the cost of cabinets, labor, etc. Go to Home Depot or Lowes for starters and price. Home Depot will for free do a model of what you want. This includes layout, etc. You can then price cabinets, tile, countertops, and whatever you plan to do with your kitchen. You can also check with a customer cabinet maker who will give you a free estimate, but may not do the computer layout as Home Depot will.

For a thousand dollars you won't get much. I remodeled a kitchen a few years ago. Stripped it to the bare walls and ceiling and had about 5 thousand into it without any labor costs
