I have no upper body strength and am trying to build some. How long will this take? Currently I can only bench press 20lbs, and 40lbs for the lateral chest pull (I think its called) and free weights I can only do 20lbs respectively. I do 8 sets 10 reps for each machine. I have only been doing my upper body for about 2 wks and can already see muscles starting to define how long is it going to take before I can lift more weight like say 80lbs.?
I am lifting and toning my entire body. It just with my lower body I have a lot of stregnth so I focus more on building muscle and reducing fat. My upper body is very week so I focus on gaining strength and reducing fat. I alternate one day upper body nxt day lower body. and so on and so forth also I take liquid multivitamins, liquid b-complex vitamins, chewable calcium that has vitamin d & k in it and I eat carbs for breakfast but protein and veggies only for lunch and dinner and I drink half my

To add muscle: Heavy weighs... short reps.
To add strength: Light weights and many reps

Make sure that you throw in some days where you lift really heavy. Meaning some days you should max out at 5-8 reps. Doing low reps and high weight will help build muscle - you don't want to do it ALL the time though - you have to keep changing your routine so that your muscles continue to be shocked.

20 lbs is much less than I curl so if that is what you are benching then I am going to assume you are still very young.

I don't recommend you start weight training at a young age. Your bones will harden to compensate for the physical activity which may stunt your growth. You may get cheated out of a few inches of height by the time you reach adulthood. Try weight training when you reach 18 years old. Young people should stick to playing sports.

Dont stop at 80lbs,when you get to heavier weights,reduce the sets to 3 and add the reps to 12.You might want to look at the benefits of soy protein isolate,whey protein isolate.Better still click on CBN.COM and go to pat robinsons age defying shake.

You will likely get better ans. here but remember your muscles need rest(Curing) so 48 hours between a good workout is better than the 24 you give it now.
