I have a 1990 Dodge Dakota LE 2WD with a V6. The transmission went out. It started to throw oil. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

what id do is buy a transmission from advanced/oreilly's/autozone, and change the tranny myself.the tranny from the parts store is often same one a shop would install.plus the tranny is warranted through the parts store, with nationwide warranty.changing the tranny isnt very hard as the dakota actually has some room to work with (i have a 95 4x4 clubcab).it also depends on just how bad your tranny is.did it simply blow a line, or is it totally fried?the trans you can use in it place is a 42rf tranny (which is in mine) its a more stout transmission.

We had a Mercury Topaz. I spent 1400 at a trans shop. They rebuilt the same one. Then it broke a line and burnt itself up and they rebuilt it again for free, then it started shifting bad but it was too far away to get it back into the shop. Topaz's are junk.

Cost me 2,200 to rebuild my silverado's. I'd say go with a new one. I've had nothing but bad luck with the shop that did mine. It's been rebuilt twice and it gets worse everytime. Get a new one if you can afford it. I'm going to have to do that with mine.
Check around and ask people on the best rebuilder in your area if you do decide to rebuild. Ask different mechanics shops who they would reccommend. Good luck.
