As an alternative to using the Show Desktop icon you can use "Windows Key" + D (the Windows Key is the key on your keyboard with 4 square boxes, usually between the left Ctrl and Alt keys)

The Show Desktop is in The Quick Launch bar by default. If it is not showing in yours, log into the computer with a different log on ID (or create a new one), copy the Show Desktop from the other ID and paste it somewhere your ID will be able to see (such as the root of the C drive). Log back in as you and drag the file to your Quick Lauch bar.

Left click and hold on the icon, drag it up to the desktop and drop it there.
