In the 13 Amendment it states that you can be a slave if you commit a crime. Has anyone ever in the United State been sentenced to be a slave. If so who? If not why not? Has it ever been used on someone(Like we request slavery isntead of 15-life)? Thank You.

"Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States" is speaking in regards to criminal sentencing such as prison and incarceration. Because prison sentences are involuntary and many times (especially in the era when this amendment was created) labor was forced the inmates were considered to be slaves. The amendment however, is not speaking in terms of "slave and master" days...the terminology is used to describe that the inmate is not free to go (slave).

This is a very interesting question. I wouldn't doubt it would be in a class. . .

If I understand things, I believe that the act of slavery was abolished after the civil war, so it is illegal to enslave anyone - regardless of criminal activity. Not to mention the ACLU and any other human rights organization would be setting fire to the courthouses if this was ever done.

Anyone in prison is inherently in this situation.

Prisoners are routinely required to perform labor functions against their will. Consider the classic stereo types of collecting trash on the highways, busting rocks, or stamping license plates. Their housing, meals and medical care are all covered by the state and they're not allowed to leave unless freed. If they escape, we send out armed guards to retrieve them.

How else would you define slavery?

There used to be chain gangs, maybe there still are. That's the closest i can think of but it was punishment not slavery.

BEING IN PRISON IS BEING A SLAVE. THEY EARN .40 CENTS A DAY TO DO HARD LABOR. IF THAT IS NOT SLAVERY THEN WHAT IS.
