Say for instance a girl and guy start working out the same day and lift the same weights for 6 months, if the girl was naturally better off with the better genetics than the guy, does that mean she will get bigger muscles than the guy? Or if a guy and girl started working out the same day, the same weights and for the same amount of time, will the males testosterone cause the guy to get bigger muscles and stronger muscles, regardless whether the girl might have better genes?

The common idea that testosterone is a male sex hormone is mistaken.

Male and female gonads produce the same hormone, which is then transformed by muscle, and by fatty tissue, into different substances (testosterone and oestrogen). This is why menstruation usually stops when a woman's bodyfat falls below about 11%; not enough oestrogen is available to operate a normal cycle. Testosterone is a normal female hormone; among other things, it stimulates libido, and is routinely used for this purpose in HRT treatment.

The Male and Female populations are OVERLAPPING SETS.

That means each set of people has a varied range of responses. In the sports world, these are usually simplified into three classes: Endo, Ecto, and Meso.

'Ectomorphic' people have a tendency to leanness, but in a way that inhibits muscle growth.

'Endomorphic' people tend to fill out very easily, but with 'adipose' (fat storage) tissue rather than muscle.

'Mesomorphs' gain muscle more easily than either of the other two groups, and there is no evidence that this condition is more normal in the male population (average levels of bodyfat don't affect the calculation; they just mean that a female mesomorph will tend to have more fat than a male Meso).

In Running, there are very few men who are faster than the fastest women. In statistical terms the two groups almost overlap totally ('nearly congruent').

(It's harder to compare the groups in strength-related events, because more potential competitors are put off by the 'unladylike' image. The rules usually discriminate, too; female bodybuilders are judged on aspects of 'elegance' that don't apply to the men.)

So the chances of finding a woman who responds to muscle-building exercise more rapidly than an equally randomly-chosen man, are a lot closer to 'even odds' than most people imagine.

There ARE some genetics involved; many people think that human society has affected evolution by encouraging big men and petite women to feel more attractive than the average; this causes them to mate with each other, and produce even smaller female offspring, and bigger males, while everybody else is having averagely-sized children. It's a bit simplistic in its interpretation of heredity, but this theory could explain why the two genders are not absolutely congruent sets.

The first answerer is incorrect. On average, with the same level of training, men will achieve far more muscular hypertrophy (enlargement). This is due to a number of factors, including male hormones (e.g. testosterone), men averaging more muscle fibres (you are born with a certain amount, which doesn't change, only size of muscle fibres change- although this has been disputed by a very small number of studies).

However, individual differences are extremely wide-ranging. So on average, men are stonger than women, but on the other hand, there are many women stonger than some men, and more adaptive to training too. Some men don't hypertrophy much, some women do alot. On average men hypertrophy much more than women.

It seems that most people don't realize that it is very difficult for women to gain muscle. That is why most women think that they cannot lift weights because they will start to look like bodybuilders. It is so untrue! For most women weights will only tone your body, not add muscle. It takes dedicated effort and a special diet to increase muscle mass in women.

As for your question, most likely the man would still gain muscle faster due mostly to his larger quantity of testosterone. It's not impossible to see a female increase in muscle mass faster than a man. It's just unlikely.

Yep, it's possible. A woman who has inherited an endomorphic (stocky) body shape is likely to gain muscle more readily than a man with an ectomorphic (tall, skinny) body shape. Testosterone gives blokes a big advantage in the muscle-buliding stakes, but it can be offset by genetics.

Well on average it will be alot easier for a male to build strength and muscle than a female, unless the female is working 5x as hard, or has an unusual amount of testosterone present in her system... testosterone is a steroid which is primarily produced in the testes, but is also produced in small amounts by the adrenal glands.. A oman's only natural source is the small amount she gets from her adrenal glands.
