I already made reservations for my toy poodle to go with me in the passenger cabin. I called United Airlines to ask them what health certificates specfically I had to bring, but the person on the other line was lost and didn't know what I was talking about. So, has anyone flown domestically (USA) with a small dog as carry-on on United? Do I need to take my dog to the vet within 10 days of departure for a health certificate? And I'm going to be in Denver for 7 days, so do I have to take him to the vet there, too, for another documentation? Thanks! Is there anything else I should know from experienced flyers?

Because your poodle will be in the cabin with you you do not need to worry about the weather. All he/she needs is a pre-flight check-up and certificate showing current good health and dates of all shots. There are no other travel requirements in Mainland USA . I know Hawaii does require more.
Ask your vet whether or not your pet can travel "fasting". It would be best (dog-doo does stink and your cabin mates can't open a window) If yes, then all you'll need is to bring a bottle of either your own tap-water or buy some filtered water and keep her on that. Dog tummies are more sensitive to changes. Be sure to put a absorbent pad and fluffy towel on the bottom of carrier and a comforting toy (like a non-food chew bone).

You need to call the airlines back, or at least any airport you change planes at because health requirements differ from state to state and airport to airport. Call the vet and let him know any requirements you have been told and then schedule the appointment. Usually your puppy will need to be current on shots, parasite free (no fleas and no worms) and just all around healthy enough for travel. Don't be in a hurry to get in and out of the vets office. It usually takes a while. There is a lot of paperwork involved but it is worth it so you have no problems in the airport. Just please make sure your dog isn' t a "yipper". I have flown on 2 hr flights where the small dogs barked the whole trip and made everyone VERY angry. Just a warning!

Call the airline to be sure, but they usually need a certain vet clearance within 24 hours of the flight. An airline approved carrier, and weather that is not too cold or too hot. So the very best thing is to contact the airlines. Some airlines won't even take pets during some times of the year, or at all.

Airlines sometimes have a form that you need to get filled out by your vet, otherwise, they just need a form from your vet saying that your dog is in good health to fly and is up to date on all shots.

Last time I brought my chihuahua on the plane with me, they did not check for her ticket, and the only people that knew I had her were the metal detector people. The crew on the plane had no idea that I brought a dog on. I just went right on by as if I was carrying a regular bag.

I agree with sharp marble on this one. They also may require, which is probably on the travel certificate, that you have proof that all shots are current. Also, for the saftey of your dog, print out a list of when your dog ate last and had any water in case the airline may need to know this. Also, any meds your dog is on, if there is any, be listed also and make sure you bring them along.

You only need to go to the vet before your trip - I believe it is good for 30 days. Tell the vet that you need a travel certificate and they will do a little check up to make sure your dog is healthy and write it up!

There is so much information covered, I have just pasted the website that will answer all of your questions.

I would also call AGAIN and speak with another representative, it is there job to know the rules to ship the animals, remember to get the complete name of the person you speak with, it may be best to ask for a supervisor. It is always best to have the name and date you spoke with the person also.
Sorry, the website above covers a LOT of information, that is why I didn't just paste it all here.
