I'll outline a couple things to follow - they aren't strategies or anything - you just said you don't want to make a fool out of yourself.
1. Tip the dealer on hands where you win a pot over 4 times the big blind. I usually do a tip equal to the small blind at least.
2. Don't talk crap about anyone else at the table, unless you can tell they are a "joker" at the table.
3. Don't announce, while you are NOT in a hand, that there is "a flush possible" or "straight possible" or anything that could be on the board. This is very irritating and can upset someone who happens to have the nuts on the hand.
4. Be respectful of everyone at the table. Leave the table if you don't like some people there - you can always get to another table.
5. Win with grace, and lose with more grace.
6. Don't buy in with more than you can lose.
7. Don't blame the dealer for not delivering your one-outer. Don't be disrespectful to anyone at all, period. You could get banned.
These are some good starting points. Start at the lowest level (limit if possible) and go from there.
Best of luck!

If you know the rules, you will absolutely not make a fool of yourself. It may be a little nerve-racking at first, but you'll get over that in about 5 minutes. If you play small stakes (4-8 limit or below, 1-2 no limit), no one should make you nervous. If for some reason they berate you, they are way out of line because the stakes are small and that level game is intended to be fun. Bottom line, just jump in there. You can always get up and leave if you don't like it. There is no obligation to play for a certain amount of time.

Super System is a horrible place to start. That book is for high stakes poker, not for beginners. Try reading any of Phil Gordon's books. Online poker is better for beginners because you can play lower stakes. If you take your cash into a casino, you will most likely leave broke. Hold 'em is a very nuanced game, and you will likely be in way over your head unless you start at the micro stakes. I love spotting a newbie at my table.

Yes! Advice! There are several websites that are pretty competitive and use NO money. ESPN has one that is pretty decent but there are many others.
Try these websites and see how you do before going to a casino. Also, if you are trying to be serious about this you will want to do research on gambling and poker playing. There are some VERY serious players that prey on new players. And I'm one of them! Be careful of me!
Do research and practice against people who aren't your friends.

Try reading some of the Tips from the Pros on http://www.theultimatepokerguide.com those will help you play at a higher level.
Mainly, don't worry. Players at casinos really aren't very good and are usually very drunk. They'll make fools of themselves far more than you could even if you were trying. Most of them barely know the rules!

You can play for free at all of the major online sites, no credit card, no deposit required. Some of them (try Ultimate Bet and Fulltilt if in U.S., also Party Poker if you're outside the U.S.) will even let you win real money playing in free tournaments.
Next, if you actually want to be serious, you have to study. A lot. And then some more. _Super System_ is a good place to start.

Hi
If you are willing to do a little bit of research, follow the approach below...
First of all, go to http://www.bonuswhores.com/ to find several new sites that offer hefty deposit bonuses, because these are the places where all the bad players go to and you can earn decent profit even if you stick to weak/tight style.
If you have limit amount of funds, i suggest you to focus on limit holdem, which is less luck-oriented and has small swing.
As for general strategy for beating low limit hold'e game, you should do your best to find tables occupied with ether loose/aggressive players or loose/passive players.
Against loose/aggressive players, stick to tighter starting hand selction preflop/strong value betting (with good or great hands, not with marginal hands like top pair with weak kicker) post-flop approach.
Against loose/passive players, stick to looser starting hand selection preflop/agressive value betting post-flop approach.
If you follow these strategies, i think you'll be alright :)

Do not worry about making a fool of yourself.
My recommendation is go with one or two of your friends that you play cards with. I did this and it was like playing a home game except with more people. Things like jumping up and down, and making rude comments about how peope play. Make polite conversation and play your style of poker, get involved in conversation if you like.
You will find that most of the poeple you meet at a poker table are very nice and easy to talk to.

online and homegames are 2 different worlds. Play for free on partypoker.net or 1 of the many others that are there, and build up a bank, and practice a lot. you are not ready for online action
