I just finished talking to a friend with BPD who was on Abilify and had a horrific experience. This may just be his reaction, but make sure you communicate closely with your doctor if you experience any negative side effects while taking it. There is a reason your doctor wants you to be on it. Good luck.

Among the latest in the line of many new medications to treat bipolar affective disorder are Aripiprazole or Abilify, atypical anti-psychotic that has been approved for treatment of manic and mixed bipolar disorder episodes since 2004, which benefits the patient by shutting down the brain's dopamine receptors so they behave more normally and thus, result in mood stabilization and the popular, Celexa. The latter is mainly an antidepressant that has been used by medical experts for a long time but witnessed more beneficial value over the last few years when treating patients with bipolar affective disorder.

Abilify (Aripiprazole) is an antipsychotic drug, also used to treat bi-polar conditions. You have not been afraid to take effexor and celexa. I'm just wondering why you are anxious about Abilify. I am sure that your doctor has prescribed this drug for a very good reason. It isn't unusual, in people with "emotional problems" for doctors to have to try different drugs and dosages till they get exactly the one that best suits that particular patient.
It would be a really good idea for you to make an appointment to see, or simply to call your doctor and tell him what is worrying you about taking this drug. I am sure he will be able to explain fully, and you can then rest your mind.

Abilify can cause tardive dyskinesia, a condition marked by involuntary movements in the face and body, including chewing movements, puckering, puffing the cheeks, and sticking out the tongue. This condition may be permanent and appears to be most common among older adults, especially women. Ask your doctor for more information about this possible risk.

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, tell your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe to continue using Abilify.

More common side effects may include:
Anxiety, blurred vision, constipation, cough, headache, insomnia, light-headedness, nausea, rash, restlessness, runny nose, sleepiness, tremors, vomiting, weakness, weight gain

Less common side effects may include:
Abnormal gait, anemia, appetite loss, blood pressure changes, bruising, chest pain, confusion, depression, dry skin, ear pain, eye inflammation, fever, flu symptoms, heart rate changes, hostility, increased salivation, itching, jerkiness and rigidity, mania, muscle cramps, neck pain or stiffness, nervousness, pneumonia, shortness of breath, skin sores, suicidal thoughts, sweating, swelling, urinary incontinence, weight loss
A variety of other reactions have been reported on extremely rare occasions. If you develop any new or unusual symptoms, be sure to check with your doctor.

The usual dose is 10 or 15 milligrams taken once a day. The doctor will wait at least 2 weeks before prescribing an increased dosage.

Trust me & stay away from the Abilify. Inless you want to become a zomiby & not know what the hell is going on in your day to day living. The clexexa is a great choice. I recomned instead of the Abilify look into Lamictal. That has worked very well for me so far I just started it a few weeks ago. Good luck to you!

Abilify is a new drug and is critically acclaimed as a very good drug for bipolar disorder. I have been diagnosed bipolar manac depressed and have requested Abilify but I am currently waiting my doctor's decision. I was on Depakote and Lexapro but things got worse for me after a while and it was suggested to try to get on a new drug which is Abilify. Wouldn't it be nice if there weren't drugs to be taken and one could get on with their life without them? I guess that doesn't happen because I am not doing so well these days waiting for a doc decision on what he thinks is the right thing to prescribe. I just want to live my life in a normal way without drugs. Sorry I am venting but it just makes me sick that I have to take pills to feel and be "normal".

I would be more afraid of the symptoms you must be having that would cause the doctor to prescribe you an anti-psychotic in the first place. At the very least, you must have severe bipolar/manic depression.

Now, here is some info about the drug itself. Remember, these kinds of reactions are VERY rare:

I have taken abilify and i have experience the side effects from this antipsychotic drug. You can become very restless and I would suggest that you do not take it if you become restless because that is one of the worst symptoms you can have.

The medication is to keep you from getting overly manic or to keep you from going over the edge. When I first began taking it, the side effects made me want to quit taking it. I would pace the floor for hours because I couldn't get comfortable anywhere. Now the side effects have settled and I have to say the pill works wonders for me.
