She is one year old and thin. I feed her well and often but doesn't gain weight. I was wanting to go to GNC and get weight gainer, but I have heard that things like that may be bad for dogs. Any suggestions?

Some dogs just like humans are naturally thin. I have an 8 year old yorkie who is truly skinny unlike his siblings and mother who are tubby! Ppl think I abuse him (soooo not the case!). She is still in her puppy stage and dogs need to finish growing up before they start putting on any "body". She should still be on a giant breed puppy food - this is really important - you could always go to the vet and ask them for something more specific, but unless you're showing your dog, it shouldn't matter. Most vets will just tell you that you should let your baby grow naturally anyway. Make sure that you're feeding her enough according to the package of your doggy kibble, but under no circumstances feed her weight gainer intended for humans! by the way, my senior dog is now back on puppy food and it has helped him gain around a hundred grams (huge for him cause he was previously 1.7kg) but your puppy should still be on puppy food! Giant dogs take a long time to finish growing.

Weight gainer is not made for canines. What kind of food do you have her on? Is it a giant breed brand? And understand that Great Danes do have a rather lank sort of form. If you are worried, take her into the vet and consult. They can weigh her and make sure nothing's wrong, and give you ideas on how and what to feed her.

Start with a check up with a vet to make sure all is okay. Then feed a really good quality food. Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. Puppy food would put some weight on her, but have you checked with a vet?

Some dogs have a reputation for being large, but in reality, they aren't suppose to be "fat." You have to be careful with putting weight on dogs that are suppose to be big because people don't realize, the weight that make larger breeds even larger makes their life less. What I mean is the large breed dogs normally don't live as long as small breeds because they are so large so why not keep the dog healthy and at a lesser weight.

I have a St. Bernard and he only weighs 106. His parents were 168 and 200, but when I took him for a vet visit, the vet informed me that my St was one of the healthiest St's he'd ever seen. He told me that even though my dog had the same body frame as the 200 pounder, he is much healthier even though he looks boney. When you put extra weight on a dog of this size, it is extreamly hard on their joints.

Please take this info into consideration before you try to weight on your dog... think of her health.

if you look at any pictures of a great Dane, the proper build of the body structure is to be tall and lean, muscles are more noticeable in the head neck and legs. in a dog of this size and age you have to be very careful as to how much weight they put on. large dogs can become overweight easily, resulting in heart troubles and hip problems.
the best advice is if the dog is a year old already, to get them checked by the vet, and continue with your regular feedings, it may be a wise idea, to keep a ready supply of water and dry food available when it is needed.
the dog will consume both as it is needed and as it grows.
it will take til about 2 to 3 years old before the dog reaches full form.

Ask the breeder and you vet. Maybe she has worms. You can check the website and you can take the help of the Great DAne club or the breeders located near you.

Add some type of cooking oil to her food. This add lots of calories and is the kind of fat that can be burned off quickly!
