I think Photoshop 7 should be re-issued on disc for £50 with no upgrade. Adobe would rake it in from home users, students and small business and still be able to protect their latest version.
I would love to love The Gimp but the default installation is for screen graphics only not print sized files, it takes an age to learn, the histogram is an abomination and there is no option to print!
It gets my vote because its legal and free but I'll never love it the way I do Photoshop:(
And Patrick L, your boss is a cheapskate fool if he thinks he'll get a decent website with Paint. I have seen it done but it takes 3 x longer to do anything.
Stick this on his pc;
http://www.eecs.wsu.edu/paint.net/ -Paint.net Paint with layers.

Yes, dammit. I've just been tasked with redesigning my company's website. My tools? Notepad and MSPaint. Notepad I can deal with, but MSPaint is an abomination.
GIMP is a poor man's substitute at the moment, I'm afraid. Whatever the FOSS evangelists want to say about it, it still isn't near level of quality and ease of use of PS. So, in the meantime, we're stuck.

Amen on my boss being a cheapskate. Thanks for the links, Sarah! Paint.Net looks interesting, I'll give it a try.

That is what I hate about those programs. You buy a new version and then they come out with a newer version the next yr. It is always changing. But I believe you only have to buy it once then you get free upgrades after that. But that is only if you get a legal copy you can register. If its registered you will get free upgrades. At least thats how adobe used to work.
