Well, MiniDV camcorders still have superior video compression compared to hard disk camcorders, so that might be a consideration, but recording to hard disk is convenient. Currently it looks like your best buys for around $1000 are the Sony HDR-HC3 and Canon HV10.

The Sony HDR-S1 may be slightly better, but is priced a couple of hundred dollars above the first two.

The "most bang for the buck" award clearly goes to the Panasonic PV-GS300 - it's rated equally highly as camcorders costing almost twice as much.

Canon Vixia HF R300 complete HD Flash memory Camcorder with 51x more desirable Zoom is a good little digital camera. The video high quality is superb, and it has the mandatory guide overides to atone for various lighting fixtures situations. This digital camera has an same lens and imaging factors because the R32, yet prices $100 and fifty a lot less. What you're giving up is 32 gig of onboard memory and the WiFi connectivity, yet I somewhat haven't any choose for both. i purchased a Trancend sixty 4 gig memory card for purely over 50 funds.

My brother has bought several Sony camcorders and has had very good luck with them in terms of reliability, picture quality, sound quality, and ease of use. If JVC camcorders are like their VCRs and DVD players I would advise you against getting one because we have had a lot of trouble with JVC. My last camcorder was a Panasonic that was very reliable and had good picture quality but the sound was AWFUL. No idea about Canon, but my Canon digital camera is GREAT!!!
