We recently bought 2 cockatiels and have all the necessary things for the cage but can anyone give me what they believe is the best book available to buy for training a cockatiel? The basics, getting them to step up etc.
Thanks

While you are looking for books and sites, here are a few pointers you should not miss. :)

Put them in two different cages, with NO mirrors if you plan to hand hold them. Keeping them together may very well likely, though not for sure, make them bond to eachother and hiss at you. Same with a mirror. A bird will often fall in love with the other bird, even if it's a mirror, and hiss and bite at you to defend his or her love.

Also, beware of things like nonstick cookware and drastic temperature changes. While not as fragile as a keet, tiels can die from the fumes the pans give off or a cold draft.

Lastly, be sure they do learn step up. Just say STEP UP every single time you move them onto your finger, or onto a perch from your finger. This will help when you NEED them to behave. Then push up on their belly, firmly and rather quickly, causing them to step up. done. Easy training.

Oh, and you can make wonderful perches and toys with pvc pipe, rather than the expense of buying them!
