The Australian Army is part of NATO and uses the 5.56mm round for the standard infantry weapon and for their infantry support weapon, 7.62mm round for their area support and fire suppression weapons, 0.30 and 0.50 calibre for their armoured vehicle fire suppression, infantry support and self defence weapons and 9mm for close in secondary weapons and 0.50 calibre for the new American sniper weapon.

I see everybody's arguing over trivia, but have basically the same answers.
Those recent NATO members who were once part of the Warsaw Pact have largely, as a practical matter, retained their old weapons.
The standard assault rifle round is the 5.56x45, and because of slight differences in the throat of military rounds and civilian rounds, and some difference in pressure tolerances, you'll get arguments as to whether it's identical with the civilian 223 Remington. Some posters are arguing over whether the M855A1 ball 62 grain round is official, but that's being a bit too picky for your purposes. This round was introduced with the M16A2 and the M855 may be a bit heavy to stabilize well in the original M16.
In the 1950's, the U.S. pretty well bullied the rest of NATO into adopting the 7.62x51, in civilian form known as the 308 Winchester. The U.S. used it in the M14 (which is having a small revival) and M60, and the round is still used especially in machine guns.
9x19 is standard pistol caliber, and 45 ACP is still available to U.S. troops, with special forces having especial requirements for the old goody.
The list goes on, but that's already more than I suspect you wanted.

NATO uses the 7.62mm x 51 and the 5.56mm x 45 round these are not the same as similar sized Russian rounds as the Russian rounds have shorter cartridges.

The standard NATO round is a 5.56 mm round . Nato uses many different round sizes however depending upon the weapon . 7.62 mm is the standard for the former Warsaw Pact . Nato also uses a version of the 7.62 mm .

Depends on the purpose. The standard NATO round for the common infantryman is 5.56mm (caliber .223). Standard NATO round for area suppression is 7.62mm.

5.56, NOT the .223
Same bullet but 5.56 is the proper specification.

BUT NATO round size for what? Assault rifle? Pistol? Which?

9mm is standard for pistol.

NATO has the 5.56(m-16, m-4, m-249 saw), 7.62(AK-47, m-60),
9MM, and the 50 cal. the 50 cal is the same for anti-vehicle and the US 50 cal sniper rifle.

5.56 or in civilian terms 2.23. this is the standard issue round for individual weopons. it gets a little or complex once you start to deal with crew served weopons and others like that.
