They are both in the same family, the corvids. This family also includes jays and nutcrackers. Ravens are larger than crows. Their bills are heavier and have feather bristles at the base of the bill. Their tails are wedge shaped rather than square. The calls of each are different. Crows caw and ravens croak. Ravens are found in mountainous and desert areas. Crows are more widespread.

There are several different species of crows in the United States; American Crow, Fish Crow, Northwestern Crow and Tamaulipas Crow. There are two species of Ravens; Common Raven and Chihuahuan Raven.

Ravens are much bigger than crows, the throat appears more shaggy, they have a wedge shaped tail, the beak is more massive than a crows and is slightly curved at the tip. A raven's call is much more deep and sounds like a crow with a bad cough, but beware of mimics. In flight, a raven will mostly glide, its size and this flight pattern often lead people to confuse them for a medium sized raptors. Whereas a crow will use powered flight and beat its wings fairly regularly.

Crows are typically smaller with smooth feathers and straight/smooth beak, Ravens are large and have ruffled wing/tail feathers, as well as a crook on the top of their beak.

To tell the truth, I think the only difference is where they live. It's a good idea to go to the web site I will list for you, and show him.

This is a great site for that. I could be wrong about the location part though. But this is the best website for research.

Good luck.
