Their biggest success was the cold war keeping the Warsaw pact in check with a credible deterrent. I don't think they have yet failed in anything except maybe will power from time to time. Though this Afghanistan mission might become their 1st failure.

Nato Success

NATO had no sucess. The way NATO was set up, it actually increased the tension of the cold war and decreased the defensive ability of a Soviet invasion by placing everyone in attack formation on the boarder between NATO and the Warsaw Pact (the Europeans. Once the Soviets had broken the line, they had free reign on Europe. It was also basically an American thing, since Europeans refused to put up on much money or men.

So I would say the biggest failure of NATO was the U.S. was doing most of the work and the Europeans went along for the ride. This is what has led to the Europeans being quickly overwelmed by military tasks.

I grew up expecting the Soviets might push through the Fulda Gap any time. That they didn't was NATO's raison d'etre for a long time, and its greatest success. Looking for failures involves either nit-picking over whether some lesser successes might have been done better, or areas in which they might have acted but didn't in areas in which they had no mandate to act. Both are pointless, and there have to date been no major failures.

biggest success has been the united attempt and eventual alliance to topple communism in Europe.
Its failures have been post cold war. The nations hardly ever agree and when they do good things happen but thats just it...they rarely agree. They failed to back the US going into Afghanistan and Somalia, both cases where the mission was clear. France usually hinders operations because they feel it imperative to give the US trouble whenever it can.
