alot of cheap presants that you can slowly discard, that's what i do, it sounds dumb, but quantity not quality is what matters to them and if there little cheap toys you can get rid of them guilt free, that's what i do with my little girl (she's 2 1/2 also) because she just likes tearing open the packages (Big boxes are a huge hit too, and large bubble wrap)

At 2.5 years old, they still don't have the concept of Christmas yet. If you are on a budget buy a couple good quality toys that spark imagination. Building blocks, kiddie computers, lights and bells are good. Nice heavy cardboard books with cute pictures. Remember they aren't aware of how much they get at this age. Also keep in mind that Jesus only received 3 presents himself upon his birth. You might also buy your child a share in a stock and each year add another share. When your child is either 18 or 21 present the entire portfolio to them for that Christmas along with easy books on investing.
You could film this Christmas and continue filming each Christmas for them and birthdays, etc. and make a CD for them to have on their 21st birthday or on their wedding day.

I have a 2.5 year old sister at home and I got her an outfit (that she won't be able to wear until the summer time) the new tickle me Elmo, and one of those bears that you draw on and then you wash them. She likes Dora the Explorer and all of that. Maybe get her something that you know she will like. My little sister is starting to like all the games for kids. She likes to have all of the cleaning toys. i.e. vacuum. You don't even have to get her toys. Give her some clothes. Kids need clothes. Get her some clothes that won't fit her now but they will fit her in a couple of months. That's always handy!

There is a Learn to dress Elmo out. It is really cute. I got one of them for my 2 1/2 year-old son. About a week before Christmas I box up any toys that he never plays with and put them in the garage for (Hopefully) the next baby, and some of them I take to Goodwill.

How about a personalized book? Kids really love to hear their own name in the storyline. Go to this website http://www.tlc-expressions.com They have lots of titles to choose from like Sesame Street, Ballerina Princess, Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, Teddy Bear Land and so many more. They are so cute and very reasonably priced. They make a wonderful & unique gift...Check it out and good luck!

Anything that comes in a large cardboard box. For years my parents put small gifts in giant boxes, cut doors into them, made a roof from the flaps, and taped them together into houses.

They held my interest days longer than any toy did

They make large piggy banks, about the size of a football. Buy a paint pen and put her name on it. She can start saving her pennies and will love it in her room. Also, it is one less toy for mom and dad to pick up.

At this age, it seems like all kids have too much "stuff." Maybe she has a college savings account you can contribute to? I know it sounds boring, but she'll appreciate it later on.

A puzzle or a jigsaw would be great....anything to stimulate her creativity and imagination. You can also buy something for her to learn a foreign language....I dunno...French, Spanish or something....that would be really great. ;) good luck and Merry Xmas!
