My 8 year old son has asked for a special Christmas gift this year while sitting on Santa's lap. I heard him whisper in his ear he would like a blue jay tail feather. Wow, I said. Where would I find one of those, as we do not live in an area where blue jays frequent. I would be grateful for any information I could get. Thank you

It is illegal to possess any wild bird, or even PART of bird without the proper permits. Even song birds, sadly. (This really applies to any wild animal.)

Now, if you do happen to come across one somehow and give it to your son anyway, I suggest you tell him he will have to be VERY careful, and secretive about his special blue jay feather. This is mostly for your sake, since you can be fined, occasionally imprisoned (although with song birds that is usually a bit drastic.)

Merry Christmas!!! :)

I have a blue jay with 5 missing tail feathers. I found the feathers under the feeder and my cat was getting ready to do more damage when I heard other blue jays sqauking trying to help the bird. I ran and got the cat away and put it inside then went back to look at the bird. It was so scared and hopping. It got into a tree with low branches so I got a chance to watch it closely. I was so worried about it surviving. The next morning it was at the feeder on the ground still no flying. I saw its wings were good but it didnt or couldnt fly without all the tail feathers. It hopped back to low brances again and I took it seed, bread and a small piece of suet and put it on the ground under it then left. I saw it eat so that made me happy. The next morning I found it again & thankful it made it through the night once more. I delivered food again and watch while ate then starting chirpping so loud and fortunately another jay flew to it. I assume it was his mother or mate that found it. This other bird picked up the food and began feeding it. It was so sweet! It is now flying and surviving well and its only been 3 days. My advice is remove the pedetors (cat in my case) take food to it without scaring the bird then leave and pray it turns around. I am so glad I didnt take it in a cage or to a vet,as some articles suggested. I am certain it would have died of fright and heartbroken not to find its family again. Trust me, Bells on cats dont work either, I had very noisy ones on when they go out, and they still catch things.

You could check out some bird stores and see if they have anything like that. As another answerer said, a craft store is good. But whatever you do, do not pick up a real feather from the ground and give it to your son for Christmas!!! Most likely, it will have mites in it if not other small bugs.

a craft store is your best bet to find a blue feather. The real thing is illegal to have in your possesion. Can't even legally pick them up off the ground.

You won't be able to purchase an actual blue jay feather, since they are protected it is as illegal to sell or even possess them. Your best bet would be to try and find imitation feathers.
