As the wife of a recovering alcoholic, I can assure you that there is no hope for the alcoholic apart from a spiritual enlightening/awakening. the 12 step program of Alcoholics Anonymous gives such an awakening IF THE alcoholic gets to the end of the rope and turns for help.

Alcoholism is a disease, (medical journals attest to the fact today) and cannot be cured, only arrested. "No drinking one day at a time" is a slogan that helps such people get through and into sobriety.

For the spouses and friends of alcoholics there is another 12 step program called Al-Anon. Same 12 steps and similar meetings. I attend. Keeps me serene through all of lifes' trials.

May I recommend the book "Alcoholics Anonymous", also known as the big book. Look at the Internet auction houses to find a used copy. All the quotations that you could ever need.

However, without the Higher Power spoken of in the 12 steps, an alcoholic is rather without hope.
