nice idea, but impractical. it's a war zone, not a dating service. AFRTS will have crews around the various locations available for people to record Video greetings. If he wishes to do so, and is able to gain access to a crew, that's great, but they will not film everybody over there, and only some will get aired on TV.

I don't think you'll need Oprah to see your daughter from Iraq. As long as the USMC doesn't have policies against major internet usage; I would try using Microsoft Messenger (MSN Messenger)because it has a built in video chat feature. If the USMC doesn't let you use instant messenger programs try Microsoft Netmeeting or a similar program.

There are many programs (and some are free to download) that are designed for video conferences. Most of these programs are designed for Windows. So if your daughter has access to a PC in the states, and you have a laptop in Iraq, and you both have good internet connections... I think you could do it without a problem.

Webcams are cheap now. You can get them for under $20.00 from almost any store with electronics (Walmart, Staples, et cetera). I dont know if they'll cary them on your base, but id try to get one sent to you from the states.

I hope this info helps you see your daughter. Check out some links below for good download sites. Thank you for the job you're doing.

Hi. I'm an Army vet who was in Public Affairs and did two tours in Iraq. One of the things we did was set up video and radio spots so troops could say hello to folks back home. If you're the Marine in Iraq, talk to your public affairs unit at your post. If you don't know who that is, ask someone in civil affairs, chaplain's office, personnel or operations. Those groups work pretty closely with PAO. If you're daughter is in Iraq, you're best bet would be to have someone video tape your message and email the link or mail her the DVD of the message.

Good luck!

i'm assuming you meant "her" marine in iraq, that she is dating a marine in the sandbox.
if so i suggest you contact him. he is the one who can set up videoteleconferences or a webcam thing. or he could use a camcorder and take a video of himself for your daughter...
unfortunately there's not much you will be able to do
