I noticed on the new this morning that a woman was being arrested for something called "Doctor Shopping". Unfortunately I had the spund down so I didn't hear the story. The little info I did get is that is has something to do with perscriptions. Can anyone tell me what it is and why is it illegal?

The concept of doctor shopping relates to a patient's addiction or reliance on a certain prescription drug or other medical treatment. Usually a patient will be treated by their normal physician and be prescribed a drug that is necessary for the legitimate treatment of their current medical condition. Once that condition has been successfully treated however, most conscientious physicians will not continue to provide their patients with the medications that they were taking. These patients will now actively seek out other physicians to obtain more of the same medication, often by faking or exaggerating the extent of their true condition, in order to feed their addiction to that drug.

It is when a person goes to more than one doctor in order to get multiple prescriptions for the same ailment, probably most frequently for pain medication. I would think it is illegal b/c either they are taking too many meds or they are selling the extras. Also, doctors always ask what medications a person is taking and they must be lying about that too otherwise the doctor would not write out a prescription for them.

Maybe she stole some prescription papers and filled them out with what she wanted to buy.. I am not sure though I have never heard "Doctor Shopping" before?

Doctor Shopping is when you go to several different doctors in order to obtain prescriptions for the same drug. Drugs like Vicodin, Xanax, Oxy-Contins, etc. Doctor shopping is illegal in the US and punishment can range from probation to prison.

It appears to be someone going to several different doctors to get more and more medications from each doctor without telling them that she already has that prescription from a previous doctor. It would be illegal because certain prescriptions are limited, and she is likely abusing medications.

It has something to do with people going from doctor to doctor to get the same medication. Usually potent pain medication.

I'm not 100% sure, but I think it means that she went to several doctors to get one prescription. She's either addicted to or selling the medication.
