To be in the Novice Division in the Golden Gloves it's less than 7 fights or less.

In the 70's and early 80's the amateur governing body in most states was the AAU then there was the ABF (Amaetuer Boxing Federation) now the governing body for amateur fighters is USA Boxing and they state any amateur with more than 7 fights is considered a Open fighter.

in Texas you would go straight to the open division because of your age-rules here for novice are -less than 18 yrs old-16 and over- 5 fights or less or having never won a major tournament -hope that helped some

You are technically considered a "novice" until your 11th bout. Then you automatically become "open." If you are entering in an advancing tournament (Golden Gloves, U.S. Championships, PAL) you can participate in the Open division with a minimum of 5 scored bouts in your passbook and, most importantly, if your coach feels you can compete against boxers with more experience.

I fought amateur at 175 in 1978 and the most amateur bouts you could have was 10 but you could fight open if you felt like you were ready with no fights good luck

Seven fights or less Sigma. If you are competing keep your hands up, keep your opponent on the end of your jab, and good luck!
