It sounds like you might need to remove a wall or two. Some walls are actually helping to support the structure, so it is crucial to determine which walls are supporting and which are non-supporting. If removing a supporting wall, then proper header beams must be installed to transfer the load to the remaining wall sections.

I would consult with a local contractor/remodeler with a good reputation. At first you could contact 2 or 3 different contractors to get their opinions on wether and how you should move forward with the expansion. Most will come out and do this for free.

If you can afford it, I would go to an architect, and ask him to design a plan for you. If that is not possible got to a contractor with references, and ask him what the possibilities are. I would start with checking the foundation.

You have to take into consideration the type of construction the building is. Some walls can just be torn down, others are barring walls that hold up what is above them and must be removed carefully.

I would upgrade the electric at this time too. It's easier to do that now than after you have remodeled. You should have a 200 amp box in a house today with all the electricity used in a normal house.

If you plan on doing it yourself, Lowes, Home Depot or any good home center carries self help books.

Good luck. I love doing remodeling, I consider it a hobby.

Home Depot may be able to work with you on some idea and recommend someone that will do the work.
