In Ireland, do you have a public health system or do you have medical insurance? How does medical care work in Ireland?

In Ireland medical care is free if you are over 70, and if your income is on or below the dole rate, at the moment 158 Euro a week.
There are so called "doctor only" medical cards, which are supposed to apply to a small income bracket above that, but the uptake is negligeable because you still have to pay for medication.
Hospital care is supposed to be free, but long waiting times have brought most people who can afford it into one of the 2 private health insurances, BUPA and NHI. The contributions are tax-deductable, as are any medical costs above 300 Euro per annum.
Costs for a consultation with a GP vary widely, in my part of the country, Donegal, it's only 35 Euro to see most doctors.

i have private healthcare with the vhi,my parents have public healthcare which is free,my mam was waiting to get an operation on her side for 8 months and was in constant pain,i had to get a lump removed and i visited the consultant on tuesday and had the procedure done on thursday,with public healthcare if you have to stay in a room with as many as 7 more people in the ward and you have limited menu,privately you would get your own room,a full menu and the best care,a visit to the doc sets me back 50 euro and then medication costs

in the north of ireland we pay for our prescriptions, all hospital treatment is free as we have paid national insurance through our work. if you are a pensioner,on a low wage, on income support or have thyroid trouble all medication is free.

people on social welfare or those who earn below a certain wage rate get free medical healthcare
people who earn above a certain rate (I think its €42000 but I'm not too sure) have to pay for their own healthcare.
it can be fairly expensive. for me a five minute visit to the doctor costs at least €50. then we have to pay for prescriptions, medicine etc. which can cost anything between €15 to €75... I personally think healthcare for under 18s should be free but it's not at the moment...

You go to the doctor and pay some little towns have one doctor you can go to the hospital too for care the costs for different things is low cost
