THe nose in the stuff is a good way to do it. I started in a garage, not as hard to clean up. As soon as it happens, you need to put the pups nose in it, not to much, and put it outside.
The usual tricks can be taught by positive re-enforcement. Sitting is saying "sit", pushing the dog's butt down, then a small treat afterward. every other trick is the same. don't be cheap with the treats though.

There is definitely another method! And, it will work SO much better than whacking your baby with newspaper!!

It is called kennel training and works b/c dogs naturally do not like to potty in their own places.

Get a kennel, and keep your puppy in the kennel when you are not around to watch her. The kennel should be big enough for her to move around comfortable, but not big enough for her to potty at one end and lay down at the other end.

All you do is keep her in the kennel, with no food or water, when you are not home. When you get home, take her outside immediately, and then let her eat. About 30 minutes after she eats, take her outside again. You should also keep her in the kennel overnight.

If she does have accidents, don't hit or scold her, just calmly pick her up and take her outside to the place that you want her to potty. Thus, she will come to associate that spot with going potty and not with pain or being scared!

And remember, the key to successful dog training is to be consistent! Keep doing the same thing, and she will get used to the routine!

Good luck!

Crate training is by far the most easy and effective way that I have used. It is less stressful for you and your puppy. Just put your puppy in his crate when you can not watch him. Most dogs will not go in a area where they have to lay. Make sure it is big enough for him to sit, stand, turn around and lay comfortably but not too big so he can go in a corner than lay at the other end. And be sure to clean the floor where he has gone before well because he will go somewhere if he smells the old urine or poo. If you place the soiled newspaper or whatever you used to clean the mess out in the spot you want him to go it will cause him to want to go there if he smells it.
IF you put him on a feeding and water schedule it will also help him get on a potty schedule. Good luck.

When toilet training our pup we were told to never rub its nose in its own mess as this will cause it to just hide away from you whenever it needs to go, like behind the lounge, the best way is to limit the pup to a smaller area of the house so you can keep an eye on it and to take the pup out first thing in the morning, after food and before sleep, if you notice that the pup is going to go quickly pick it up and go to the same spot in the yard everytime, so it associates the spot with going to the toilet. Also i found the following on the net which might help. Good Luck....Puppies need to relieve themselves frequently. Always take them outside to the same spot first thing in the morning, after every feed and last thing at night. After a short time you will easily recognise when your pup wants to go to the toilet by his behaviour. He may become agitated, sniff the ground or become generally restless.

To toilet train your puppy, you must show patience and never rub his nose in the mess or punish him for accidents inside the house. This only makes matters worse as the pup will continue to relieve himself indoors - but out of your sight. If the puppy does have an accident in the house and in your presence a firm immediate NO will suffice. Then clean and spray the area with deodorant or disinfectant to deter him from using the same spot again.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aMQm9

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

The first thing you would have to do is study their habits. Puppies generally have a strong urge to eliminate after eating, playing or just after waking up. Establish a routine after those specific events. Early in the morning, always take your dog out, and repeat cues, for example I tell my dog "Get busy". After doing so reward your pet as you normally would with treats and "good dog". At night time your dog should be in a crate that is not too large, otherwise it will find a spot to eliminate in. Always let your pup eliminate before going into the crate. It's also very important to let your dog get plenty of exercise. What your trying to teach your dog is to hold in it's urge to eliminate. A dog will never eliminate in it's private sleeping space.

So after eating wait about 5-10 minutes while keeping a close on it. If you notice the dog sniffing in circles, it's time to go outside! Same goes for playing. First thing in morning, before a shower or anything else, take your pup out. Once you have established a routine for your pup and notice no mistakes in the house for about a month, your good. If ever the puppy happens to eliminate in the house do not punish your dog as it may become fearful. Just make yourself a promise to keep a better watch on your pup. Good Luck!

Yes. There is a better way and it is much nicer, easier, faster and less smelly.

Take your puppy out ALOT. After eating, drinking, before playing, after playing LOL.
Most of potty training is getting the pup to the right place before they HAVE to go.

Always take the pup out on a leash and STAY with the pup while she does her business. Then praise and reward her like crazy. Jackpot her with treat---Give her three or four, one at a time, and then play a bit outside if the weather is nice. Make the treat a good one that she only gets for going potty outside. (Pick one spot in the yard, always go there and she'll prefer it even as an adult when you are not holding her leash.)

Confine her inside in a crate or pen unless you can watch her closely. If she goes inside, scoop her up and take her outside and then when she potties outside, praise like crazy.

Soon the pup will get the idea that going outside is a GREAT thing and means treats and petting and fun. The pup will want to go outside.

Get this book "Before and After Getting Your Puppy" by Dr. Ian Dunbar. He explains this and has a ton of helpful tips.

BTW This method worked for me and I was taking an 8 week old pup out in miserable weather last February. We're talking sleet and snow and freezing rain at times. He didn't want to be out there and neither did I, so he learned to go fast. This is awesome because now I can take him out on a leash and have him potty quickly and on command.

My breeder (who has dogs with titles in everything ) uses the same technique with her dogs.

Oh! I almost forgot. When the pup is older and you're going for walks, potty first in the backyard and THEN go for the walk. Never walk, potty and then inside. The dog will learn that potty signals the end of outside fun time and hold it as long as possible which will be a pain if you ever have to get the dog to go quickly before you leave the house.

Best of luck!

PS Rubbing your pup's nose in it or hitting her may only teach her to potty where you can't see her---which will mean finding "surprises" behind the couch, etc.

The best way we have found is to kettle them at night. Then in the morning you have to immediately take them outside to releive themselves. They always have to go in the morning and it is the only time you have any real control over it. They may go in the kennle once or twice to begin with which sucks but they learn real quickly not to because they don't want to sleep in it. After a while they just no they need to go to that door and then you just have to watch for them wining or sitting in front of the door. They also get used to sleeping in there which is nice. We don't even lock our dogs in there kennle anymore because when they are tired they just go sleep in it. Its there little safe place to sleep.
