Since the femur is the strongest bone in your body to have it fracture other then trauma from automobile accidents would mean there are things going on in your body to weaken the bone. For instance, Osteoporosis. It use to be assumed that more women then men suffered from this, but I've seen alot of elderly men with this as well. There has also been an increasing number of fractures in children due to not getting enough calcium from milk and milk products. Hopefully this answers your question.

the proximal femur is essentially the ball or head of the leg bone which goes into the hip socket.
Therefore the most people likely to get hip fractures are little old ladies - old due to age issues of osteoporosis, ladies because women are more at risk typically than men.

In old age due to osteoporosis, and three times commoner in women than in men due to harmone dependency and osteomalacia.. Next is people with osteoarthritis hip which is rare. Next is pathological fracture due to secondary deposits and Paget's disease in the elderly. In the young it is due to the bone cyst.. Very rarely fatigue or stress fractures may occur in this region in young adults due to unaccustomed physical activities.
