We have 3 Dell 9150 Dimensions, Windows XP. They get regular windows updates. All of the sudden now, Windows Media Player 10 or 11 will not play the audio from CDs or DVDs on any of our Windows computers. The MPlayer classic won't play them either. It says format not supported.

I updated RealPlayer and it plays the CDs fine, so I don't think its a sound card problem.

Any suggestions?

I had the very same problem on the second Tuesday of November when Microsoft updates all of their critical updates.

One or more of the updates caused my WMP 10 to loose all sound. I check my system and my sound was on and not muted.

I upgraded to WMP 11, same, no sound. In the end I had to go back to WMP 9 an I know have all my sound an all other options that vanished with the critical updates.

Unable to tell you why or how this happend with the critical updates. All I know is that I have 100% use of WMP 9 after the last critical updates.

For your info., Real Player is owned by the United States Army out of London, England. My state of the art security systems block Real Player from installing as there is a embedded trojan that tracks everything you do. My security traced the trojan back to Real Player.

Just for the hell of it, I removed the file with the trojan and tied to see if I would be able to install Real Player. I received a pop up sayng, "you removed a file and Real Player will not install unless you put the file back".
