What are some good books that I can get for my daughter (6yrs old, 1st grade) that has good sight words, as well as words that will challange her to sound out? Also, she still has a habit of writing some letters and numbers backwards....any thoughts on how to help her remember which direction their supposed to face? Any help would be appriciated.

Put a chart up in her room with numbers and letters on them. You can buy one at a school supply store or just print one out on the computer. (Look carefully at what font you use so the letters look normal!)

Let her play online at http://www.starfall.com

The "Bob Books" series is great for beginning readers.

Dr. Seuss books are good - especially "Hop on Pop" - lots of repetition of sounds and easy to sound out.

The old "Dick and Jane" books are also good. Lots of sight words and repetition.

My mom has these books with like 1 sentence with 5 wordds in them for my brother and he has learned to read all of them. But the Leap Frog things help more in his case. Try those.

To help with spelling/writing, I picked up a Magna-Doodle. It's a lot less wasteful on paper and you can take it basically anywhere.

My son really liked Dr. Seuss books. They were fun to read but also helped him concentrate on really reading what words are there. :) Happy reading!
