Many dogs only bark when they have something to say. The problem with your potential living situation is that the dog would have a great deal to say, such as "someone is outside the door," "someone just knocked on the wall next to my head," and "I just heard a crash upstairs."

Unlike an apartment building where noises/sounds start to develop a pattern that a dog can learn to ignore, a dorm is a constantly changing, evolving environment that a dog would constantly be learning which changes they need to react to.

A Basenji does not bark, but it does make sound.

BTW Are you certain you can have a dog on campus?

If you are looking for doggie companionship while you are away at school, find a local shelter (www.petfinder.com) and volunteer there.

Best wishes.

Comapnionship and guardian traits come with any dog. SO DOES BARKING!

If you're going ot be living in a dorm why don't you wait? What happens if you get kicked out because of your dog? Where will you go? Or would you just give up the dog?

A dorm is not a quiet place by any means. Not the best place to have a dog. Besides, how much exercise will you actually be able to give it? I would wait until you are done with school.

I could understand if you already had a dog and taking it with you, but why get one when you move to a dorm? Especially a large breed like a golden? You can't keep a golden retriever in a dorm room! Think rationally here!

How about a cat? A cat would be much more content in a dorm room and much more quiet then a dog.

Do not get a dog.....................You are not ready for the responsibility of caring for a dog. You can't describe what you did in your question and expect to get it. You cannot leave a dog alone the amount of time that you would. You are young and in school. You go out, I am sure. How much of your time would the dog get? Who is going to walk the dog 3 or 4 times a day? Who is going to housebreak the dog?

The first year of life a dog is very expensive. Probably $700 to $850.00. That would be for shots, check ups, neueter/spay, heartworm and flea/tick medication, on and on. Are you prepared for that??

I am sorry for being so negative. But so many people get dogs or cats and when they discover how much daily work it is they take the animal to the humane society or dump it some where. The dogs you are considering need high quality exercise every day. They would be miserable living in small quarters without a large yard.

I'm probably a little biased, but I'd have to say a Lab would be the perfect dog for you. I should know something about them. I've owned five. They're friendly, unless they sense there is a reason not to be. They're protective of their family. They're big enough to be a guardian, yet not so big that they eat you out of house and home. Good with kids. The barking part I'm not sure about. My dogs are never left in the house alone all day. But a lot of that, I think, depends on the personality of the dog, regardless of breed. I've never had a Lab that was a chronic barker, but they sure bark when the UPS man shows up, or any unfamiliar vehicle for that matter.

Check into a Basenji! They are smaller dogs, about the size of a Beagle. They do come in different colors and there is a red color, like a fox. They don't bark at all! Though they are not mute, they do make other noises though. They also do well in smaller areas as long as they are given enough play time and exercise. With this breed of dog, you do need to kennel train them or they can become distructive if not kennel trained. If you have any questions on the breed, just email me or check out the web for websites about Basenjis.

email address is on my profile.

Dogs bark! That's a fact of life. Sorry but You will have a hard time to find a dog that doesn't bark! You could try finding a site for bark less dogs but for the life of me I cant think of a quiet breed.Good luck in your search!

It wouldn't be fair to any dog to have to stay alone in a small dorm room all day. I would wait until you are out of school to think about getting a dog.

Get a Labrador Retriever. They are good natured, protective, and they don't bark much. I have owned 3 and one of them had 13 puppies, so out of 16 Labs , they all exhibited the the charactistics you are looking for. Plus they come in chocolate, yellow , and black.

my aussy shep doesnt bark (unless we've got her wild and playing hard), and i've heard that they usually dont bark unless they need something. i've also heard the same about border collies. if you give your pups everything they need, they will not have reason to bark. spaniels bark like crazy - personal experience
