i feel that my teaching is above their ages, and a lot of times i don't think they are having fun.

if you are there trying you are doing a service for GOD. try going to your nearby BIBLE book store and see if they any primary teaching methods and guidelines for this age group.. find out who taught this group before at your church and ask them for ideas.. visit a big church of your denomnation and see whqat they do in their classes. Keep it up you are doing fine and will succeed. BECAUSE YOU HAVE GIVEN YOUR TIME TO DO THIS GOD WILL LEAD YOU.. JUST ASK.

I have been a children's church (Sunday school) teacher for 15 years. I teach 3/4 yr olds. I hope you're not teaching 4-9 yr old all in one class. If so, no wonder you're having difficulty. 4 year olds learn @ a completely different level than 9 yr olds. We have a pretty large church, so we are able to split the children up by age group. For ALL children, FUN is the name of the game. Movement within the classroom is important. No matter how old they are, few of them will sit still while you read a Bible story or scripture passage. When you have your story or scripture, try to break it down to a one word PRINCIPLE you believe is supposed to be taught (i.e. love, honoring mother/father, prayer, etc). You can build a lesson plan around that. Don't know how long you have to teach them. I've turned tables over and made them spaceships to travel back to Biblical times, made trains out of the chairs in the room. You can make games within the classroom that give them opportunity to jump and move...Jesus says...Biblical hopscotch. More than anything, they need to know that God is LOVE. If they know that they know that they know that God loves them and YOU love them, they'll learn more than you think they do. Email me if you have any other questions. After 15 years, I've got a lot of suggestions. Msterriblack@yahoo.com. Thank you for serving our children. They are our most important resource.

I always hated Sunday School. It is made to be so serious and threatening. Maybe you could lighten up the lessons and just tell the stories from the Bible (one each week) and have the kids do crafts afterward or color related pictures. There are children's books out there depicting stories from the Bible. They might be more fun.

7-8-9 should be the easier people in the group...
Try to slow your teaching down, turn it in to simple little games, and let them have fun!

It was hard for me too. It seemed I was to indepth for them sometimes. Do you use the teaching guides they give ya? Stick with those if they give you guides to go by.
